Utilization of Low Molecular Weight Organic Compounds by Marine Neustonic and Planktonic Bacteria
نویسندگان
چکیده
The efficiency of utilization of low molecular weight organic molecules by neustonic and planktonic bacteria inhabiting the waters of the Gdansk Deep region has been determined. The most intensive growth was observed in the presence of amino acids, while carbohydrates and organic acids were utilized less actively. Glutamic acid, asparatic acid, histidine, glycine, cysteine and calcium lactate were the most suitable sources of carbon and energy for the bacteria. Significant differences in the level of intensity of assimilation of low molecular weight organic molecules by bacteria inhabiting various water layers occurred.

Aromatic Hydrocarbons Decomposition by Neustonic Bacteria Part II - Policyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Biodegradation
The present paper provides results of a study on heterotrophic bacteria occurrence and quantity in the biofilm and subsurface water of lake Jeziorak Maty. Degradation of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) (anthracene, naphthalene) by neustonic and planktonic bacteria have been examined. It has been discovered that some aromatic hydrocarbons were better decomposed by neustonic bact...

The present paper provides an account of a study on benzene, toluene and xylene degradation by neustonic and planktonic bacteria in lake Jeziorak Maty. Aromatic hydrocarbons were better decomposed by neustonic bacteria than planktonic bacteria. Moreover, the obtained data point to the total number of bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria number being greater in surface microlayer than in subsurfa...
متن کاملHydrophobicity effect on oil degradation by two marine bacterial strains Alcanivorax borkumensis and Thalassolituus oleivorans
Variations on hydrophobicity were monitored in two marine obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria: Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2T and Thalassolituus oleivoras MIL-1T. These strains were inoculated, separately in ONR7a mineral medium with different concentration of sodium acetate. During 10 days measurements of cellular abundance and cellular hydrophobicity (capacity to adhere at polystyrene) were c...
متن کاملInvited Review Role of photoreactions in the formation of biologically labile compounds from dissolved organic matter
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can be degraded by sunlight into a variety of photoproducts that stimulate the growth and activity of microorganisms in aquatic environments. All biologically labile photoproducts identified to date fall into one of four categories: (1) low-molecular-weight (MW) organic compounds (carbonyl compounds with MW of <200); (2) carbon gases (primarily CO); (3) unidentifi...
متن کاملDistinct dissolved organic matter sources induce rapid transcriptional responses in coexisting populations of Prochlorococcus, Pelagibacter and the OM60 clade.
A considerable fraction of the Earth's organic carbon exists in dissolved form in seawater. To investigate the roles of planktonic marine microbes in the biogeochemical cycling of this dissolved organic matter (DOM), we performed controlled seawater incubation experiments and followed the responses of an oligotrophic surface water microbial assemblage to perturbations with DOM derived from an a...
